Spring has really sprung

It will be hard to stick with my day job today -- it is supposed to be 75 degrees this afternoon! Our latest project is building a small hoophouse for our late seedlings.

I cut some posts the other day, and Maryellen and I put up one wall yesterday. Hopefully another one goes up today. Have fun outside today!

What the heck is a hoop house?

Also, some other questions:

- what are all the vegetables that you will be growing this year?

- how do you plan to sell them?

- where can we buy them?

I was stuck inside all day today working. I am giving blood tonight at church as part of our parish's holy week blood drive. Looking forward to hearing more about the farm.

A hoophouse is a generic term for any unheated greenhouse. Basically what we are building here is a 10' x 15' frame, with a slanted roof that will be 5' high on one side, and 8' high on the other side. We will then frame out a door, cover the entire frame in 6 millimeter plastic, and create two side vents for insulation. Then the sun does its magic, and we should be able to maintain the house at 85-90 degrees everyday, which is optimal for tomato, pepper, squash, and melon seedlings. So while it is 60 degrees outside on May 1, our heat loving seedlings will be toasty warm. At night, if the temps get too chilly, we will bring the seedlings in the house for the night.

We hope to grow a mix of about twenty different vegetables this year and market them at a local farmer's market and perhaps at a small roadside stand. But things are still in flux, we are making this up as we go along!
