It really is old
I was goofing around on EBay a week or two ago, and I made a very modest bid on a replica of a map of Peacham, Vermont from 1875. Well apparently there wasn't a lot of competition, because I won. The map arrived in the mail yesterday, and sure enough, right where we are it says "R.B. Shaw". And a couple of houses down it says "J. Shaw". It may be time to pay a visit to the Town Clerk's office or the historical association in town to see how far back these Shaws go.
Posted by peter at April 22, 2003 05:33 AMHey do you think that any of the guys who lived on your property or in your town were Green Mountain Boys? When do you think the area was settled?
Posted by: mike, pgg brother at April 22, 2003 05:47 AMI don't know the answer to your question, though I am sure an hour or so at the Peacham Historical Society could answer it. However, I think the chances are excellent. According to http://www.historicvermont.org/html/timeline.html
Green Mountain Boys organized in 1770, and in 1779 the Bayley-Hazen military road was blazed from Peacham to Lowell Vermont. We live by the old Bayley-Hazen Road.
I think it's really cool to be able to get a history of a place and imagine how the previous occupants lived and used the quarters. I collected a little bit of that on Killingworth and the Champlin family and what their life was during the Depression and WWII. But if you know the Shaw's were there 125 years ago, that's a great start to understand more about them.
