Mink

I saw a beautiful, sleek, brown mammal this evening on the farm road, by the Northwest corner of the barn. I am pretty sure it was a mink. When I was looking for a photo on the web, I read that young minks leave their mothers in the fall, so maybe I saw a young one trying to find his or her own new home.

I wonder Maryellen if the mink live down by your brook or your pond. It must have been something to see. Several years ago I saw two young black members of the weasel family run across the road in a swampy area near our house.I stopped the car to watch and pretty soon they ran back across the road oblivious to me sitting in the car watching them. I got out of the car and went to see where they had gone and saw them sitting up in a small tree like raccoons just watching me.

I'd bet they do. When I first caught sight of the mink, or whatever it was, I thought beaver, even though it was the wrong shape and too agile to be a beaver. The animal did look like a good swimmer though.
