Reading time

We went to the NOFA winter conference this weekend, and we had a great time. I am very excited because I picked up two new books at the conference -- Steel in the Field and The Hoophouse Handbook (scroll down a little for the latter). Both look like great reading.

Also, we hit some helpful workshops, got some t-shirts and such, and had a yummy lunch. I had to help present at one workshop, and facilitate another one, and both those went well. Plus, we knew so many more people this year that it made me feel like we are really starting to become part of the farm community up here. And Waverly made some new baby friends. All in all a successful day.

I hope you enjoy the Hoophouse Handbook. I also hope you are considering purchasing one. Down here where I farm in sunny Raleigh, NC, successful growers use them to extend the season as well as you can in your colder climate. Enjoy your posts, I hope to increase mine on my site now the season is here.

Hi Tom,

Thanks for stopping by! And I like your site. I got to tell you though, North Carolina seems like it must be a tropical paradise to us northerners. Planting in February! That is awesome. We still have two feet of snow.

We do have one hoophouse up that we built ourselves. Let's see if I can put a link here in the comments.

There is a ton of cedar on our property, so we just framed out somthing in wood that would be sturdy enough to hold up 6 mil plastic. We are debating about buying a real greenhouse frame this year, in addition to building more of our own. Building our own is cheaper, but requires more labor and guess work.

Anyway, good luck down there!

Ok, the link didn't work. Here is the archive page with a picture of the hoophouse we framed out.
