Overflow

One of the other problems we run into this time of year is the seedling log-jam. It seems no matter how much space we have for seedlings, we hit a point in early May when we can't plant them out fast enough.

Right now the heated greenhouse is full to overflowing!

This year, the solultion has been to put the overflow in the unheated hoophouse that Mark and Susannah built last summer. Brassicas mostly, plus onions and lettuce. The hot stuff, tomatoes, peppers, eggplant, stay in the heated house.

There is a frost tonight. The unheated shed, will it be warm enough? Do you take soil temp to figure planting time?

Actually, it did frost pretty hard last night - in the low to mid 20s here. The unheated house should be Ok. There are only cold hardy seedlings out there, the structure is worth about 5 degrees, and I went out there about 11:30p.m. last night and started a portable propane heater for the chilliest part of the night.

We probably should take soil temps for planting, but we mostly just stick our hand in the ground and intuit it. Plus, with our short season we need to push the envelope. For example, we have had lettuce in the ground under remay in the field, but it simply hasn't grown at all because we have had a total of two warm days in May so far. So things are still a bit behind until the soil warms up more.

hehehe It's Kentucky windage on Vermont soil temps.

Well the dandelions on my lawn have found the temperature to be just fine.

Thanks for the feedback.
